What you will learn
Absolute masterpieces tell the story of Italian art, and, in parallel, of Italian language. This intermediate course proposes a chronological "path" of artistic "itineraries", works by "top league" and revolutionary artists like Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio, while giving an opportunity to revise and practice grammatical structures and language at CEFR B1-B2 level. Each "itinerary" analyses a single masterpiece with the help of beautiful photos, related text and activities and it presents it in its historical, social, and cultural context, with a focus both on its intrinsic artistic value and on its wider significance for History of Art.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe artistic works and discuss their value
- Read texts on artistic masterpieces and their historical, social and cultural context
- Listen descriptions of artistic works, while learning art-related vocabulary
- Revise and practice grammatical structures at B1-B2 level
Entry requirements
No formal qualifications are necessary; a working knowledge (intermediate) of the Italian language is required to be able to follow the course in Italian only.

You will do independent reading, research and language activities before every lesson. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required.
What you need
You will need a device to access online video sessions in Teams and materials (handouts and links to various websites) supplied by your tutor in Moodle.
Class format and activities
You will communicate with video lessons (in Microsoft Teams) and focus on the language with very effective learning activities and materials between lessons. You will get clear guidance and ongoing, regular and informal feedback from your tutor, in a friendly and supportive environment. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, i.e. progression to an advanced level course.
