What you will learn

In this course you will improve your general knowledge of the language, with particular attention to listening and oral production skills and the acquisition of the vocabulary essential in the field of gastronomy and Italian cuisine. Understanding written Italian is also developed in order to help learners understand texts dealing with this subject. The course is intended to familiarise learners with typical Italian dishes. You will learn in a practical manner the basic principles of Italian cooking, such as pasta, stews, bread and pizza and the typical dishes of Italian regional cuisine, such as saffron rice from Lombardy and pasta alla Norma from Sicily. This course is aimed at learners who wants to learn the language, but have the curiosity to apply it to a practical field with creativity, in order to improve their health and wellbeing.

    This course will run online. Tutor will introduce the topic/ingredients/recipe of the week and show how to proceed with them, by live or recorded video. This is a practical course, where you will practise and improve your Italian, while cooking and inventing recipes. Usually homework will be preparing a recipe at home, or creating a menu in pairs/groups. Therefore communication and collaboration among peers will be promoted and enhanced, as well as learning independently.

    Entry requirements

    We recommend that you have completed Stage 2 Unit 3 or equivalent before enrolling for this course.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Regular work is given to be done at home to support and consolidate your learning. You should therefore dedicate some time for this on a weekly basis.

    What you need

    You will need a device to access online video sessions and materials (handouts and links to various websites), supplied by your tutor in Moodle. A textbook for this course will be discussed with tutor.
