What you will learn

Discover a variety of basic and more advanced hand knitting and crochet techniques, as well as advice on knitting garments, accessories and shapes. This is a practical class in producing colourful, lively and original work in a variety of techniques. Students are initially encouraged to produce a sample pack to log all techniques covered in class. From this, students progress to personal projects with tutor guidance and support. The course provides group demonstrations and one to one teaching. A variety of yarns are provided for sampling and experimentation. Supplementary short courses enable the acquisition of additional skills such as yarn dyeing and garment designing.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic knitting and crochet techniques
  • Be able to read and follow knit and crochet patterns
  • Perform finishing techniques, like blocking and joining
  • Knit/crochet and measure a tension swatch
  • Demonstrate an understanding of more complex knitting/crochet techniques

    The course is a hands on practical workshop exploring a wide array of crochet and knit stitches, exploring a variety of basic and more advanced techniques. Covering a range of techniques the 10 week course will alternate focus between Knitting and Crochet each week, with each session covering a new set of stitches or construction methods. A wide array of inspirational Imagery, examples and handouts will be available to students. The class will offer group demonstration master classes, group discussion and lots of one to one support, enabling students to grow ideas, learn from peers, energise and extend personal practice. Tutor Katie Jones will bring in examples of her personal work to inspire with use of colour and pattern and to show how with the basic skills, your crochet and knitting work can progress.

    The course is suitable for complete beginners through to more experienced crocheters who want to try out new ideas.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 or Art & Design Admin on: 0207 450 1934 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs. Students work sitting around a table and does not require a high level of stamina, however students needs a high level of manual dexterity due to use of hand techniques.

    it would be helpful to bring: Knitting Needles Crochet Hooks Yarns/ Wools Sketchbook/ notebook A5 or A4 Pencils/ coloured pencils/ pens Note: Some Materials will be provided during the class but with limited choice, During the first sessions your tutor will inform you what materials and tools are good to purchase for further lessons.
