What you will learn

Get better at writing for work, study and everyday life. This course will help you develop your writing skills by giving you a clearer understanding of English grammar as well as strategies to improve your spelling and use of punctuation. You must be working at Entry 3 to join this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Write clear and well-structured paragraphs, using appropriate topic sentences, supporting details and concluding sentences.
  • Demonstrate coherence in writing by using linking words and phrases to connect ideas.
  • Express ideas effectively and appropriately for different purposes and audiences.
  • Edit and revise written work for clarity, organisation, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Class format and activities

You will learn through reading and writing, focusing on grammatical structures and strategies to improve your writing. You will work on your own, with others in a group and take part in discussions. You will be given regular assignments to complete in class and for homework. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English and be studying at Entry 3. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance is expected from all our students. You will be required to complete homework outside class time and be able to use the internet.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined writing pad with margin, a ring binder folder for your work, pens and a dictionary.
