This course is for students who want expand their knowledge of glaze technology and theory. You will test and analyse glaze materials and explore how using different materials can affect the surface quality of glazes. You will explore how to formulate ‘special effect’ glazes, for example, crater, crawl and matt glazes for use with sculptural ceramics and experiment with layering one glaze on top of another. Each session you will review, analyse and share your results as a group to gain a deeper understanding of glaze technology. Previous experience in fundamental glaze technology is required.
The class will be a mix of practical and theory. You will be listening and note taking about the chemistry of materials as well as making test tiles and weighing and mixing test glazes. You will sometimes be working in pairs and share information and results with the group.
This course is for students who have previous experience in fundamental glaze theory and glaze making.
The ceramics studio is on the 3rd floor and there is lift access. If you have any concerns or requirements please discuss this with your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required. You can also contact admin - shirley.ryan@morleycollege.ac.uk
A notebook and pen will be essential. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Appropriate masks will be available to buy at £3 each. you may bring your own.
Morley College offers a wide range of non-accredited courses at all levels of ability, as well as a certified HND Ceramics course. Students can also look to progress onto other part or full time Ceramics or 3D courses such as BETC, BA degree or MA postgraduate courses. Your tutor is also happy to advise you in setting up your own studio. After several years of study many students progress to setting up their own ceramic practice and exhibiting in open studio / house weekends and local and national craft fairs.
