Gain a qualification either to improve your job prospects or to meet the entry requirements for an Access to Higher Education or HND course. The English Language GCSE course will develop your use of English - reading, writing and verbal communication - and introduce you to a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: GCSE (9-1) in English Language [AQA]
This course is online. You will attend classes using the video-calling platform Microsoft Teams. However, you will be required to attend in centre for some of your sessions, for all formative assessments and for the GCSE exams. You will work to develop your reading, writing and presentation skills. You will work on your own and in groups to discuss and share ideas. You will also complete regular reading and writing assessment tasks. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at grade 4 or above in your GCSE English Language exams. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an Access to Higher Education or HND course.
You must be fluent in spoken English and have the skills to write accurately and expressively. You may have previously studied GCSE English Language but achieved below grade 4 (grade C). All students must sit an assessment to ensure they are at the right level to begin the course. Not all students who apply are offered a place. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.
Excellent attendance and punctuality is expected from all students. The course carries a considerable workload and you will be expected to complete at least two hours a week independent study.
As this course is online, you must have a reliable internet connection and a computer or laptop. You will also need A4 lined paper, a pen, a ring binder folder for your work and a dictionary.
If you successfully complete the course, you may be advised to progress to an Access to Higher Education course or Vocational Study area such as Business or Childcare.
