What you will learn

Get confident in reading and writing. You will learn to read and write short stories and emails, spell everyday words correctly and use punctuation. You will work towards achieving the Entry 2 Functional Skills English qualification.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read and understand simple texts, such as short passages, signs, labels, and basic instructions.
  • Identify key details and basic information from a text.
  • Use basic reading strategies, such as scanning and skimming, to locate specific information.
  • Write simple sentences and short texts with basic grammar and punctuation.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to express basic ideas.
  • Write short messages, notes, and simple descriptions
  • Participate in basic conversations on familiar topics, asking and answering simple questions.
  • Understand and respond to simple spoken instructions, directions, and basic everyday conversations.
  • Speak clearly and express basic ideas using simple sentences and relevant vocabulary.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in English (Entry 2) [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

You will work on your reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will work on your own, with others in a group and also take part in discussions. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at Entry 2 Functional Skills English. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to English Entry 3.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English. You will have been born and raised in an English-speaking country or studied in English. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to study outside of class time and be able to use the internet.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined writing pad with margin, pen, pencil, coloured highlighters, a dictionary and a ring binder folder in which to keep your work.
