What you will learn

Prints are always a result of a journey, from an initial idea to information gathering and finally the realisation of an image. Focusing on progressing one or two prints, you will work on self-directed projects with individual tuition, advice and guidance from the tutor. Set in a calm environment, there will be progressive steps to help you make progress and to go on a journey to collate and consolidate ideas. You can either work on a personal project or respond to a project directed by the tutor. For example, a recent project included focussing on master printmaker, Eileen Cooper, exploring her technique and picture making qualities, using this as a starting point. A similar project will be proposed at the beginning of the term. Beginner students will look at creating a composition suitable for either linocut or etching. Drawing and compositional tasks will be set by the tutor before deciding on the final image. Close technical guidance will be given thereafter to produce the print. For returning students, there will be an emphasis on creating a print which will include two or more printmaking techniques in one image i.e. linocut and etching or linocut and woodcut. Close guidance will be given to explore a variety of printmaking techniques and support on a one to one basis and through group discussion. Students will be encouraged to visit galleries throughout the term and gain in depth knowledge of contemporary printmaking practices. Students are also encouraged to learn from their peers and share their experiences throughout the course. Halfway through the course there will be a close look at sketchbooks to look at how ideas are progressing.
