What you will learn

Working with an A4 size Japanese plywood this woodcut course will look at making a multi-coloured image using the reduction method. After the image is designed on the woodblock a registration board is made and the white areas are removed from the surface. The wood block is then printed multiple times before the next area is cut away and reprinted on top of the originals. Not for the faint hearted this method is often referred to as ‘suicide technique’ as there is no going back! Guidance will be given on how to work with and maintain woodcut tools. There will be group discussions and one to one support throughout the course.

Experiment with colours and image making ideas
Learn how to cut into wood and produce different mark making effects
Learn how to ink and print the woodcut
Use equipment and tools safely in accordance with health and safety advice given by the tutor

Class format and activities

You will be shown examples of prints for your reference. The tutor will give demonstration of techniques and methods where applicable, followed by learner hands on practise. There will be group discussions and one to one support to address individual needs. Throughout the course there will be a sharing of work in an informal but supportive manner. Working with a variety of materials students will be required to adhere closely to the safety procedures .All students record and assess progress via a Learning Statement and through the development of their work and research.

Entry requirements

It is suitable for those new to printmaking with no experience as well as those with some experience in printing who want the opportunity to broaden their skills and re-acquaint themselves with printmaking procedures. Drawing skills for this course are desirable. This course offers many outcomes in the work produced so a willingness to come open minded and experiment is an advantage.

What you need to know before you enrol

Health & Safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy, and some may cause irritation in very rare cases. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant or have any sensitivities and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

What you need

Please bring: pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook. Protective clothing is provided, or you can bring your own apron and rubber gloves. The course fee includes most studio consumables (ink, cleaning materials, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, etching plates/ lino blocks etc. These are available to buy in the department at cost price. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
