What you will learn

Gain the confidence and skills to write effectively, read with fluency and use language appropriately in formal settings. You will read a variety of texts, gaining knowledge and understanding that can be applied to your own writing. You will develop the skills and confidence to give formal presentations and speak in a group. You will work towards achieving a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Take part in formal discussions and presentations on topical subjects, speaking clearly and presenting your own views
  • Recognise and identify a range of language techniques used in persuasive writing
  • Read a selection of texts to identify their main purpose
  • Identify layout and vocabulary features typically associated with different types of texts
  • Plan, draft and write a range of texts, including formal letters, reports, articles and emails using the appropriate layout, spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Use a range of strategies to spell words linked to work, study and daily life

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in English [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

You will work on reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will learn through tutor instruction, discussion, group work, independent study and individual presentations. You will be given regular homework assignments in reading and writing. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at Functional Skills English Level 1. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to Functional Skills English Level 2.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English. You may have grown up in an English-speaking country but had your education disrupted. You need to have successfully completed an Entry 3 Functional Skills English course. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to complete homework outside of class time, including researching topics using the internet.

What you need

You will need A4 lined writing pad, pen, pencil, coloured highlighters and a ring binder folder for your work. You will also need a dictionary.

If you successfully complete the course and have excellent attendance, you may be advised to progress to Functional Skills English Level 2.
