What you will learn

Get better at writing for work, study and everyday life. This course will help you develop your writing skills by giving you a clearer understanding of English grammar as well as strategies to improve your spelling and use of punctuation. You must be working at Entry 3 to join this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use a range of strategies to correctly spell everyday words for life, work and study
  • Plan, draft and complete writing that is grammatical and uses spelling and punctuation correctly
  • Recognise simple grammatical structures and apply them to your writing
  • Write simple and compound sentences that are grammatical and correctly punctuated
  • Identify the different word types that make up sentences e.g. articles, pronouns and conjunctions

Class format and activities

You will learn through reading and writing, focusing on grammatical structures and strategies to improve your writing. You will work on your own, with others in a group and take part in discussions. You will be given regular assignments to complete in class and for homework. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English and be studying at Entry 3. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance is expected from all our students. You will be set regular reading and writing assignments to complete outside class time.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined pad, a ring binder folder for your work, coloured pens and a dictionary.
