Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use a range of reading skills in order to identify the main purpose of a variety of texts e.g. persuasive, descriptive
  • Identify some language techniques (e.g. direct address, facts and opinions) and explain why they are used
  • Plan, draft and write a range of texts, including formal emails and letters
  • Use grammar, punctuation and sentence structure correctly in your writing

Class format and activities

You will read a range of texts and begin to analyse how they are put together, identifying who they are written for and why they are written. You will complete group and individual exercises to write informal and formal texts, developing techniques to check and correct your own work. You will learn through a range of strategies, including tutor instruction, working on your own and with others in a group discussing and sharing ideas.
