This course is for students who need to brush up their skills before joining the accredited Level 2 Functional Skills English course in January. You will focus on strengthening your reading and writing skills and your understanding of different types of texts.
You will read a range of texts and begin to analyse how they are put together, identifying who they are written for and why they are written. You will complete group and individual exercises to write informal and formal texts, developing techniques to check and correct your own work. You will learn through a range of strategies, including tutor instruction, working on your own and with others in a group discussing and sharing ideas. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to the next stage of an English Level 2 course.
You must be fluent in spoken English. You may have been born or raised in an English-speaking country but had a disrupted education. You need to have passed Level 1 Functional Skills English. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.
Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to complete homework outside of class time, including researching topics using the internet.
You will need A4 lined paper, a ring binder folder, pen, highlighters and a dictionary.
If you have excellent attendance and pass the end of course assessments, you will be able to progress to the accredited Level 2 Functional Skills English.
