What you will learn

Further develop your basic hand and foot techniques for playing contemporary music styles like pop, rock, jazz and Latin. Suitable for players with two terms' experience. Please bring your own drumsticks.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Further develop your Timekeeping skills with and without a click/backing track
  • Develop a wider awareness of different hand and foot techniques to play the Drum Kit
  • Play and maintain a wider variety of grooves with consistency
  • Identify and recognise the use of previously studied concepts
  • Further develop and apply your music reading skills
  • Perform in front of the class

    Follow verbal instructions and practical demonstrations, work and practise as part of the group and individually and Perform in front of the class. Your input and participation in discussions and Q&A sessions is very important

    Entry requirements

    Having attended terms 1 and/or 2 or having a basic understanding of the following: Subdivisions: Crotchets, Quavers, Triplets and Semiquavers Basic Quaver, Triplet and Semiquaver based Drum Kit grooves Basic music reading skills Students joining in the spring term are advised to contact the Music Department Office before enrolling

    What you need to know before you enrol

    A regular practice routine is essential to keep up with the course and get the most out of it. Due to the nature of the instruments/content of the course you might be exposed to high volume levels. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a pair of ear plugs to every lesson.

    What you need

    A pair of Drumsticks - access to a drum kit or practice pads is advisable. We will give you advice on how to make your own makeshift materials to keep up your playing remotely. Optional notepad and pen This term the course will be delivered online so you will need an Email address that you can access regularly; you will also need to get familiarised with the basic use of video conference software. You will also need a reliable internet connection.
