What you will learn

Discover exciting urban landscapes of London including the river, parks, buildings and streets. Work outside to study form and perspective, composition, space and atmospheric elements and develop your studies and ideas back in the studio.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the main forms and perspectives within the urban landscape
  • Use a sketchbook as a visual resource to develop images and ideas
  • Create a range of compositional studies identifying scale from different viewpoints
  • Learn how to select composition and abstract specific elements
  • Incorporating possible Lockdown restrictions, describe atmospheric use of colour and light by painting/ sketching outdoors
  • Experiment with materials, mark making, and textures

    This is a practical class and you will spend most of your class time drawing and / or painting. You will learn a range of techniques to capture the urban landscape in different ways.

    Entry requirements

    This is an intermediate / advanced level class and is recommended for those with some drawing and /or painting experience who wish to concentrate on landscape (e.g. Drawing or Painting for Beginners). Advanced learners will be encouraged to build on and develop their skills and a personal style.

    You will need to supply your own art materials.

    You will need to supply your own materials. These should include: cartridge paper (e.g. a sketchbook), soft pencils (2B-6B), eraser, sharpener, willow charcoal, glue stick, scissors and if painting, watercolour or oil or acrylic paints, prepared paper or canvas, brushes, mediums.
