What you will learn

Everyone has a story to tell. Do you enjoy shooting footage on your camera or smartphone and find yourself documenting your world and the people in it? This course will provide an overview of documentary film history, filming techniques, and the essential skills to enable you to produce a short documentary. You will learn basic camera techniques (e.g. aperture, ISO, and shutter speed) framing, composition, and how to develop a narrative structure, as well as work with sound to record interviews.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn a brief history of the genre, examine the structure of different types of documentary film.
  • Understand what makes a “cinematic shot” using composition skills and depth of field, and how these can add production values to your work.
  • Learn how to make editorial decisions and how to create a natural but impactful narrative.
  • Gain an understanding of shooting techniques by using video cameras and interviewing subjects using sound equipment.
  • Learn introductory recording of sound techniques
  • Learn the principles of editing footage to create a narrative

    This course is delivered at Morley College, Waterloo Centre. Our affordable courses are taught by industry professionals in friendly, well-resourced classroom and studio environments. We are London's largest provider of courses for adults who come to study for fun, to develop new skills for professional development or to apply for Higher Education. You will learn in a comfortable well-resourced photography and video studio via a mix of presentation, active learning exercises, assignments, demonstrations, hand-outs, step-by-step instructions, pair working and group discussion. The most up-to-date software is available. Manageable project work will be assigned between and during classes to help you progress and one-to-one tuition will be given to help develop your ideas and skills. The classes are informal and allow for question-and-answer sessions and technical advice and support, depending on your needs. You will receive regular assessment and feedback on your progress.?You will work as a whole class, in small break-out groups, in pairs and one-to-one with your tutor. Learners will be encouraged to use the class forum to share and support each other with project work between classes if required.     Entry requirements

    The course is suitable for complete beginners, or those with some experience in film and video-making who want to learn new skills or explore new ideas. Good computer skills are essential for making this course a success. Therefore, all students are expected to be confident in using a computer for tasks such as word processing, saving, managing files, browsing the internet etc. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes and discuss related topics, therefore, all students must be able to speak, read and write in English.

As part of the course, you will be asked to read material, take notes, listen to instructions, present, and discuss your work with your tutor and to others, give and receive feedback on your work and discuss related topics, therefore students should have a reasonable level of skill in speaking, reading, and writing in English.
