What you will learn

Explore this exciting printmaking techniques for transferring an image into print media for stunning and dynamic results. You will learn to work in the light and well-equipped studio with specialist facilities and develop ideas and imagery into a portfolio of creative prints. A photograph or other imagery such as a drawings is reproduced onto transparent film and exposed onto a uv-light sensitive plate. The plate is then developed and etched in acid for photo etching and water for photopolymer, either plates are then inked and printed in the traditional intaglio manner.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

    Class format and activities

    To ensure you make the best possible progress on your course you will have regular feedback from your tutor in a constructive and supportive environment. Final prints can be submitted for our ‘Summer Printmaking Exhibition’ in July when we enjoy a lively Private View to celebrate the work created during the year on all our printmaking courses.

    Entry requirements

    The course is suitable for those new to printmaking, photographers wanting to explore alternative photographic processes, those who wish to re-fresh their printmaking skills and the more advanced student wishing to perfect their techniques and develop their personal work.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The Printmaking Studio is at the Morley Chelsea Centre, Hortensia Road SW10 in the Carlyle building, room CG05 on the ground floor. The building is shared with the Royal Ballet School and is adjacent to the main college building. The college is located just off the Kings Rd and Fulham Rd nearest tube/train/overground stations: Fulham Broadway/Earls Court/West Brompton 10min walk, Imperial Wharf 15min walk, 10min bus ride no14/414 from South Kensington Underground Station

    What you need

    You will need to bring (memory card/USB/cloud, etc.) a selection of digital photographs either in colour or BW, JPEG/TIFF/PSD format with a minimum resolution of 10Megapixels for an A5 size plate. It is essential to select a photograph or image with good tonal contrast that contains a good balance of darks and light. There is a studio fee of £9 payable each term to the tutor which covers basic materials, except paper and plates which you pay extra for as you use them.
