What you will learn

Are you ready to take the first steps in training to become a counsellor? This course will give you the underpinning knowledge, skills, and competencies to use counselling skills ethically and safely in a variety of contexts and roles. It is for students who want to start the first level of training as a professional counsellor or who want to learn counselling skills in other professional or helping roles. . This qualification will not teach you how to be a counsellor but it will you decide whether or not you want to train as one and it will give you counselling skills that are useful in a variety of roles e.g. care assistant, key worker, support worker. . It will also help improve your professional and personal relationships as aspects of the course enable you to explore your development, awareness, communication and interpersonal skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of the person-centred approach to counselling pioneered by the American psychologist Carl Rogers
  • Understand the basic principles of the skilled Helper
  • Be able to conduct a 10-15 minute counselling session
  • Be able to give counselling skills feedback

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Certificate in Counselling Skills (RQF) [CPCAB]

Class format and activities

Class scheduled to run Thursday : 9.30 pm– 12:30pm Class requires a minimum number to run. If this number is not met, we will be endeavour to offer you a suitable alternative. Average class size – 12. This number can change based on presenting circumstances. You will learn experientially by active participation in classroom exercises and discussions. You will be expected to work with other group members, to share a little of yourself with them, and to listen to and respect what others in the group share. It is important that you are open to the possibility of learning more about yourself through your interactions with others in the group. This involves giving and receiving constructive feedback from tutors and peers. NB: Counselling training requires you to be resilient and emotionally secure. This qualification is not suitable for prospective students who may be currently in a state of emotional difficulty, experiencing recent traumas, loss, addiction, or mental health issues. This is because the course involves experiential elements, which will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities. This will be discussed at interview. To ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor.

Entry requirements

CPCAB Level 2 Award Introduction to Counselling Skills – or equivalent qualification with at least 10 hours face skills practice in last 3 years. You will be asked to provide evidence of this to the interviewing tutor On line application and successful Interview with tutor. If you do not already have not already undertaken an Introductory course, please speak with the interviewing tutor who will explain your options to complete it at Morley college this year.

What you need to know before you enrol

Morley College is an organisational member of BACP (The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). We work within the BACP ethical framework in the design and delivery of our counselling provision. We expect all students to work within professional standards. 100% attendance and punctuality is expected from all students on this course. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time. You must keep a weekly reflective journal alongside completion of set assignments to build a portfolio of evidence. Your portfolio will be stored electronically through MS Teams. This allows you and your tutors to manage your assessments and feedback online as you progress through your course. This is the help you progress through the qualification, building your knowledge, skills and self-awareness in line with the CPCAB progression model. To achieve the qualification, you must also pass an external marked assessment set and marked by CPCAB. As a student at Morley College London, you have access to Microsoft Office 365. Microsoft Teams in an application within Microsoft 365 – it is your primary mechanisms for communication, studying and sharing resources on the course. You must be confident using IT (MS Teams) Independently to complete and submit assignments. CPCAB require a minimum attendance of 80% to pass the qualification. There is also an independent study requirement of completion of independent weekly 400 Reflective learning journal
