This is an intermediate level class, for students wishing to design and make contemporary jewellery in an environment that encourages experimentation and the use of a wide range of materials. Students can choose to respond to a set brief or work on independent projects. Emphasis is put on creative and thoughtful ways of finding inspiration, helping to open your mind to the possibilities of contemporary jewellery, and creating more original designs.
After an initial introduction to the terms’ project brief you will be introduced to techniques that are suitable for the project and that you might want to try out. You will work on developing your own ideas on how to respond to the brief and get guidance in this process from your teacher. You are encouraged to create test-pieces as a way of developing your work and you will use the well-equipped workshop to realise your designs. You will also have the time to work on projects you have initiated yourself. Group discussions will enable you to share ideas and experiences with other students in the group and show and tell sessions will allow you to see what other students have been making. There will also be regular one-to-one chats with your tutor.
This course is an intermediate jewellery class. Students need to have previous experience of jewellery making and should have attended a beginner’s class before enrolling. Students need to be able to work independently and to be interested in developing their own original designs. Students who are open to questioning what contemporary jewellery is, and are willing to experiment will get the most from this course.
The jewellery workshop is on the 3rd floor of the main building, however there is lift access. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.
All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals and other materials such as paper, acrylics, enamel etc. There are some items you will need to purchase yourself such as precious metals (silver and gold), stones, saw blades and specific sized drill bits. Your tutor will help you assess your material requirements for each project and provide a list of suppliers. It would also be helpful to bring:• Sketchbook and pens/pencils.• A variety of found objects or unusual materials you may wish to work with.• Apron and hair band to tie back long hair.
This is a progressive course and you will benefit from continuing on the same course next term where the tutor will be able to help you develop your style and jewellery making skills.
