What you will learn

Using a computer effectively is now an essential skill - at home, at college, at university or at work. It can help you communicate more effectively, access information more easily, and a certified computer qualification makes you more attractive to employers. So how do you gain the best computer skills or demonstrate those that you already have? The answer is ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence). It's one of countries leading IT User qualification - recognised and valued in workplace and internationally as proof of competence in IT.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Gain a BCS ECDL Level 1 Award in IT User Skillls
  • use Word processing software to: produce appropriate, straight forward or routine documents - including creating documents, inputting different types of information, saving and organising your files, editing, formatting and using tables.
  • use Spreadsheet software to: perform calculations and create charts, use a range of basic tools and techniques to create, save and organise spreadsheets, input date, edit and format information and organise page layout.
  • use Presentation software: create a slide presentation including, how to input different types of information, create, save and organise slides, edit and format your slides run a slide show and print it.
  • You will learn the general skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint that you need for working in today's work place.

Class format and activities

This will be a practical, predominately, centre based course. There will be an opportunity to work online using Microsoft Teams and Moodle, the College's VLE platform. Most work is individualised, although you will be encouraged to work in pairs and small groups. It will be a relaxed learning environment and step by step learning will help you become more skilled. You will need to practice outside of the classroom. Assessment methods Each of the three modules include a diagnostic assessment, mock exam, and an exam lasting 45 minutes, this may be longer if a candidate has support needs.. The exam will cover the skills that you have been taught during the previous unit. All exams are online.

Entry requirements

This is a Level 1 course for students at general beginner level. All students need to have a beginners/entry 3 course or have relevant experience. You will need an interview and assessment if you are new to Morley College before enrolling on this course.

Effective IT User skills help you unlock the potential of your computer and the programmes you use. You'll discover new, faster ways to communicate, solve tasks and access information. This course gives you the opportunity to improve your computing skills and IT knowledge, learn new software and gain a recognised qualification awarded by the Chartered Institute IT (BCS), Level 1 ECDL award in IT user skills.
