What you will learn

This course is for learners who want to develop their skills and creativity in fashion design and construction. On this course, you will build upon existing pattern cutting skills (e.g. from prior Level 1 study or other relevant experience) to learn a range of specialist pattern cutting techniques -The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to be able to draft garment blocks and patterns. You will produce a range of garments which incorporate a selection of style variations and techniques. You will work to develop your technical knowledge, take personal measurements and translate them into basic blocks and 3D outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Work safely and effectively when using tools equipment and materials
  • Select appropriate tools and specialist equipment
  • Apply pattern cutting techniques, processes and terminology used in pattern construction
  • Experiment and develop design ideas
  • Evaluate and present work to a professional standard
  • Enter employment, respond to professional opportunities or to undertake further study

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Certificate in Fashion [CG]

Class format and activities

Mode of delivery will be in the centre with social distancing. Typical activities will take place in the format of ? direct teaching with tutor demonstrations, ? peer to peer discussions, ? practical skill development and use of examples. Demonstrations with workshop practice will form the main body of the learning environment. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. i.e progression to another course.

Entry requirements

Students gain entry onto this course via an interview. Ideally students should have previous pattern cutting knowledge from one of our short courses.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Students are generally expected to spend some time outside of the taught programme for completion of activities to develop learning and self and peer evaluation.

What you need

You will need the following equipment: Tape measure, paper and fabric scissors, ruler, pattern master, 3H-4H pencil or technical pencil, fine steel pins, glue stick, magic scotch tape/masking tape, eraser, push-pins, french curves, sewing threads, (1 reel of black and white) A4 or A3 ringbinders to store handouts. You will also need to budget approximately £30 - £60 for materials to experiment with.

What you can do next

On completion of this course, students will be able to progress into further study/training in the fashion sector within Morley College. Students will be able to enter into work experience, employment/self-employment
