What you will learn

This weekend course is for artists, designers and makers needing to understand the basics steps to start their self-employed practice or set up a creative business. We will explore how to get started, key legal issues, getting paid and how profit is taxed. Creative marketing, networking and promotional strategies will be explored with tight budgets in mind

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Confident about how to get your practice or creative business started.
Understand what to do before you officially register as self-employed or a limited company
Have a deeper understanding of some crucial issues such as invoicing, protecting your copyright and how your business income will be taxed
Be able to plan an affordable professional marketing campaign

Entry requirements

This course is ideal for those who have started an arts or crafts practice, or wish to become a freelancer or set up their own business on a part-time or full-time basis. Equally if you have developed an interest in art or design, or have an idea for a creative business then this weekend course will also be an ideal starting point.

What you need to know before you enrol

The course is suitable for people at all stages, so if you are still studying, becoming more serious about a hobby, a recent arts or design graduate or have been actually trading for a number of months. The content of the course can work for students at different stages and can be appreciated and applied to your own situation.

What you need

It would be helpful but not mandatory for you to have some examples, images or photographs of your art, craft, design work or creative product on both days of the course. Three to four examples e.g. jewellery, t-shirts, cushions, etc. or A4 printouts of artwork, images or photographs would be sufficient. Please bring along a paper notepad and pen.

Class format and activities

There will be a number of short presentations accompanied by extensive handouts and useful mindmaps. During the course there will be some group activities and time for debate.
