What you will learn

A BTEC Level 2 First Award in Principles of Applied Science could be your first step towards a career in science. This 1 day a week daytime program provides a grounding in scientific principles vital for both scientists and citizens of the future. It develops and exemplifies these principles in applied and vocational contexts, leading to an understanding of how the principles are applied in practice. The Award comprises four mandatory units that underpin the knowledge and skills that are key to progression within science based industries. These mandatory units cover the range of essential scientific principles together with underlying introductions to essential knowledge and applications in chemistry, physics and biology.

  • Biology and Our Environment

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC First Award in Principles of Applied Science [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

The course will involve a range of learning activities including presentations, lab based practical work, group work, videos and discussion Achievement on your course will be measured by assessment of the 4 mandatory. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course.

Entry requirements

You should hold Level 1 qualifications in English and Maths. We do not require you to have any formal qualifications in Science. Morley College does offer a range of short courses in all aspects of Science in our 'Key Concepts in Science' series which can provide a gentle introduction should you wish to complete these first.

What you need to know before you enrol

Your BTEC course will be very enjoyable, but also requires commitment if you are going to succeed. Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. Your course requires attendance 1 afternoon a week. The course runs from the beginning of September to the beginning of July. Assessment of the BTEC Level 2 First Award is by a mixture of internal and external assessment. Principles of Science will be assessed by an external exam. The other 3 remaining units are assessed by internal assignment. You will be expected to do regular reading and written work in addition to your attendance in classes. What you can do next

Learners can progress on to a BTEC L3 National in Applied Science, or to a BTEC Level 2 National qualifications in related areas. Learners can also progress to our iGCSE in Human Biology course. Learners may be able to progress on to the Access to HE: Science or Health and Human Science courses (additional entry requirements apply)
