What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- play, produce, and record music in a variety of contemporary musical styles
- develop and apply technical and musical language to your own work and that of others
- understand and apply rehearsal, performance and studio techniques
- work effectively with others in performances and recording sessions
- make use of a wide range of music production software such as Logic Pro, Ableton, Sibelius, etc
- complete a portfolio of recordings, performances, and/or compositions
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC Higher National Diploma in Music [EDEXCEL]
Class format and activities
• The course will involve a range of teaching sessions, including seminars, lectures, group discussions and tutorials,• Regular lessons will be enriched further by workshops by industry professionals; previous guests have included Mark Lettieri, Joel Cadbury, and multi-Grammy Award winning band Snarky Puppy as well as Peter Jenner (Pink Floyd) and Steve Cheney (Glastonbury, Latuitude),• You will work on practical real life projects to develop your music performance or production skills,• Lessons will involve both individual and group practical work,• Opportunities to take part/assist in public performances will be available throughout the year.
Entry Requirements
We welcome applications from anyone who feels that they are capable of reaching the standards required by the qualification., , We appreciate that mature students may have extensive experience, including experience gained through paid or unpaid work or through other types of professional training or sector related opportunities., , If you have recently been in education it is likely that one of the following will provide a suitable entry profile:, ,• a relevant level 3 qualification,• a GCE profile that indicates strong performance in a relevant subject,• an Access to Higher Education Certificate
Before you enrol
The HND is a two-year course, with lessons three days per week. The College has a range of specialist resources to support the delivery of the programme, including a state-of-the-art recording studio, music technology suite and rehearsal rooms. You will also have access to computers, scanners and printers in the College’s learning centre. You will be assessed through graded practical and written coursework.
What you need
You will need access to a laptop or PC. For those in the Music Production pathway, it is recommended that you have access to Logic Pro, Ableton or similar to be able to complete the assigned work. Performers will need to provide their own instruments, though keyboards, drum kits, microphones and amplification equipment are provided by the College. You will also need to bring storage devices (USB sticks or hard drives) to store your projects, music or sessions. Relevant text books, sheet music and materials will be required for the course; your tutor will provide you with full details. Please refer to the student handbook for further information.
What you can do next
An HND is recognised as equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree, and many universities will accept it as credit towards a top-up degree programme. It is also a respected professional qualification in its own right, so you could progress to a range of careers in the music industry or move into teaching or self-employment.
