What you will learn

The HND in Art & Design (Graphic Design) at Morley College Chelsea Centre for the Creative Industries is designed to provide students with a broad ranging experience of this ever-evolving subject area. The course is aimed at those who wish to work as professional graphic designers. This industry has exhibited growth over the past 5 years, especially in areas such as digital advertising, website design and digital design services. This course will help you to develop and extend your creative practice as a designer by providing you with a wide range of experiences such as working with clients, exhibiting your work, engaging with industry focused projects and competitions. You will study graphics related techniques, contextual studies, typography, packaging and printmaking during year one of the course. Year two will include opportunities to explore professional practice, web design, art direction, branding and identity. You will work towards an end of year exhibition at our Chelsea centre during year one and two. We also intend to participate in the D&AD New Blood Festival in London as a culmination of your studies in the second year. You will be supported via tutorials and regular contact with the course team. BTEC Higher Nationals in Art and Design were developed to enable students to progress to employment or progress to a final year at university . The qualifications were designed in collaboration with higher education institutions and industry partners from the creative sector.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Year 1 is comprised of eight level 4 units: Graphic Design Practices, Professional Development, Contextual Studies, Individual Project (set by Pearsons), Techniques and Processes, Typography, Printmaking, and Packaging.
Year two is comprised of six units at level 5: Professional Practice, Applied Practice Collaborative Project (Pearson set), Advanced Graphic Design Studies, Web Design, Branding and Identity and Art Direction.
• Devise a project and follow the design process from initial research into historical and cultural contexts, ideas generation, creative development, testing and experimentation, through to finished outcome
• Develop individual work to a high, professional standard
• Confidently design and make for different contexts, across both personally and commercially led projects
• Work with traditional and non-traditional materials
• Demonstrate industry knowledge and ability to represent themselves professionally
• Communicate visually through portfolio, illustration and sketchbook
• Develop own skills and techniques through independent problem-solving
• Understand the qualities of specialist materials and processes, and be able to select appropriate materials for given contexts
• Present work as a means of communication aimed at engaging a specific audience
• Evaluate art and design practices as a means of socio-political critique or commercial promotion

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC Higher National Diploma in Art and Design [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

This is a full-time two year course, which is delivered onsite at Morley College London's Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries based in our art and design studios. You will access Mac equipped work spaces, tutorials and independent working. Our class sizes are small to enable close working relationships so you can receive more individual support from tutors. We believe this small group working is key to success, as you can be guided closely through workshops, and receive a high level of contact time with academic staff. Our small class sizes also mean that we are a close knit group, therefore commitment to the course is vital. Excellent attendance, punctuality and engagement are key to succeeding. There is a strong focus on the development of practical, technical skills, employment-focused transferable skills and personal independent working practices. Delivery from our academic and technical team is complemented by visiting speakers, industry input, live client briefs, engagement with national competitions and presentations. Students benefit from a high level of contact time with tutors. Students will experience exhibiting their work in the onsite gallery at Chelsea. Each project gives the opportunity to follow a range of processes and help students to understand the conditions of a brief, allowing students to build up confidence and understanding of their own creative process and how it can best be developed in order to support progression into the graphic design industry. Assessment methods are in the form of: ? A portfolio of work that demonstrates the learning outcomes ? Written assignments and reports ? Practical Tasks ? Presentations ? Formative feedback ? Peer Feedback ? Summative Assessment

Entry Requirements

All applicants are required to apply through UCAS and will need to attend an interview with a member of the course team who can discuss the course and its requirements with the individual applicant so they can make informed decisions. We welcome applications from anyone who believes they are capable of reaching the standards required by this qualification. Applicants should have a background in art and design, and a level of drawing and design ability which enables them to be able to develop work independently. A portfolio will be required at interview to help confirm the programme suitability to the applicant, and should demonstrate practical ability, research skills and creative thinking. Entry is established at 48 UCAS points equivalent achieved through: - Access to Higher Education Diploma - A levels - BTEC at level 3 in related area With GCSE English grade 4 or C minimum, GCSE Maths is desirable. Mature students: if you do not meet the entry requirements as outlined above, we may still consider your application based on previous employment or previous study. We appreciate that mature students may have extensive relevant experience gained through paid or unpaid work, or through other types of professional training or sector-related opportunities and this experience may be used to support an application. English language requirements: Morley College London require higher education students to have a minimum level of 5.5 (IELTS or equivalent) with no score lower than a 5 in listening and speaking and no score lower than a 5.5 in reading and writing.

What you can do next

Upon completion of the Level 5 HND course, students may be able to progress to Level 6 qualifications, including the BA (Hons) Top-up at Chelsea or elsewhere. Students may also progress into industry, employed in professions including illustrator, designer, web designer, marketing assistant, design assistant, freelance designer, artworker, advertising creative, digital marketing, social media marketing, publishing designer among others.
