What you will learn

The HN in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking course has been developed to enable students to interrogate 2D practices across a range of processes. With a focus on hands-on, process-based expertise, the course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge of a broad range of primarily 2D practices. You will have the opportunity to test, develop and refine work to understand the various intricacies of each method of production. With drawing studios and a fully equipped print-room, you will have the opportunity of learning from experienced tutors, who are industry experts and dedicated to their disciplines. As this course is broad and experimental in its approach, you will be able to develop your work into a range of outcomes, depending on your own personal direction. We encourage new thinking and diversity in approach, you will be able to develop processes into personal and meaningful outcomes specific to you. Our workshops cover a breadth of practice from exploratory beginnings to finished works, including a wide variety of print techniques, traditional and experimental image making and drawing skills which will include advanced life drawing, landscape and technical drawing for industry; and the practical application of the creative skills learned to produce exhibitions. Through modules focussing on professional practice, you will gain real industry experience, including live briefs and collaborative practices to build industry ready skills. You will work in dedicated specialist studios alongside our other creative pathways, you will be part of a creative community.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Devise a project and follow the design process from initial research into historical and cultural contexts, ideas generation, creative development, testing and experimentation, through to finished outcome
  • Develop individual work to a high standard
  • Confidently design and make for different contexts, both personally and commercially led
  • Work with traditional and non-traditional materials
  • Demonstrate industry knowledge and ability to represent themselves
  • Develop your own skills and techniques through independent problem-solving

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC Higher National Certificate in Art and Design [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

There is a strong focus on practical, technical skills, developing personal and independent working practices. Delivery from our academic and technical team is complemented by masterclasses, industry input and presentations. Students benefit from a high level of contact time with tutors. Technical skill development will be supported by tutorials to push individualised practices. This will also be supplemented with industry visits, and masterclasses. Independent study will also develop student autonomy and ownership necessary for progression into practice.

Entry requirements

Entry is established at 48 UCAS points equivalent, achieved through a creative subject qualification such as: - Access to Higher Education Diploma - A levels - Level 3 Extended Diploma with GCSE English grade 4 or C minimum, GCSE Maths is desirable.

What you need to know before you enrol

The course has a focus on commercial practices which can be applied to a range of specialist pathways, therefore an understanding of which pathways are of particular focus to you would be advantageous. You will also be required to complete work independently, outside of studio sessions, to enable you to utilise your time effectively.
