What you will learn

Hedi Kyle's work focuses on the book as a three-dimensional object that can be explored and reinvented beyond traditional modes of binding and display. In this course students will be introduced Hedi Kyle’s book structures including her folding, cutting and sewing techniques. You will learn about, construct and reinterpret many new structures using a variety of suitable materials.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand book binding techniques, structures and ways of working
  • be able to bind a multi-section book
  • understand attributes of bookbinding materials and tools, and how to use them
  • understand the general terms and functions of parts of a book
  • develop your own interest in bookbinding

    In class, you will learn through demonstrations and practical work. There will be demonstration, group discussion and one-to-one tuition.

    No. This course is suitable for beginners or as a refresher if you have done some bookbinding before. It is ideal for people who have an interest in arts and crafts and would like to gain good hand skills in bookbinding.

    If you have them: notebook, pencil, rubber, metal ruler, craft knife, bone folder, scissors., There will be an opportunity to buy materials and tools needed at the first and subsequent classes. Tutor will give advice on things you may need.
