A hands-on class exploring the basics of blues piano playing and helping you acquire simple improvisation skills in four friendly and informal sessions.
• The four classes will take place on Mons and Weds 6:30-9pm, in a keyboard room at the Waterloo centre (each person has their own digital piano)
• You will practise with other like-minded pianists and also take turns playing live. Two acoustic pianos are also available.
• You will learn accompaniment and improvisation skills.
• You will listen to a selection of blues piano recordings in various styles.
• Frequent demonstrations will be given by tutor. Pieces will be provided from his book 'Improvising Blues Piano' (Schott Music, 1997).
• Previous piano-playing experience (minimum Grade 3 or higher).
• Music reading skills an advantage, but learning by ear is also possible.
• Time to practice between classes
Because this is a 'crash' course, you will be asked to absorb quite a lot of information in a short period of time (4 classes over two weeks). You will need to find time to practise in between classes and make a commitment to completing any homework given.
Handouts will be provided online. To view these you'll need to be able to access the Morley 'Moodle' website using your user name and password provide by the college. You are recommended to print out handouts in advance of each class. No paper handouts will be provided.
Join BLUES PIANO 1 - a weekly class on Tuesdays, 6:30-8:00pm, starting 20 September 2022, lasting for 3 terms (finishing July 2023) . The tutor can advise about other classes which may be suitable for you, eg: Jazz Piano.
