What you will learn

Learn to design and cut a set of coordinating, wood mounted blocks. Print and overprint repeats and border patterns on to cloth and paper. Traditional techniques and simple dye fixing can be continued at home on a kitchen table.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Design and cut a pair of coordinating lino blocks for printing onto paper and cloth
  • Prepare dyes, dye pad and hammers to create a series of crisp repeated prints
  • Develop varied patternmaking with overprints and colour combinations
  • Make a cushion sized fabric, or a short length of printed paper or wallpaper

    This highly practical workshop will take you through all the stages of designing, cutting and printing a range of alternative pattern repeats on fabric and paper. All techniques can easily transfer to a kitchen table and be continued at home. Tutor's samples, books and artist images will inspire your designs.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The textiles studio is located in the Nancy Seear block on the second floor accessible by stairs or lift and stair lift combined. If you have any mobility support needs please contact ALS on 020 7450 1972 before enrolling. The print process requires some standing and striking each print with a mallet.

    What you need

    A simple image or design idea is desirable as a starting point. A notebook, pencil and apron will be useful.
