What you will learn
Enrol on this course to develop the skills required to plan, prepare and deliver guided tours suitable for a 21st century audience, both as walking tours on the streets and as virtual presentations. Focusing on the London Borough of Lambeth, this one-year course taught by LAMBETH TOUR GUIDES ASSOCIATION mixes tuition on guiding skills with learning about the diverse history, architecture, tourist attractions and facilities of this vibrant Borough. Participants will learn how to assimilate this knowledge and how to select and present information in order to lead visitors on guided tours. Participants will also develop the presentation skills required for virtual tours and the practical skills needed to conduct guided tours.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Design and deliver walking tours and virtual presentations
- Talk knowledgeably about all aspects of the London Borough of Lambeth.
- Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded their certificate in Lambeth Town Hall. They will also have the exciting opportunity to help shape the future of tour guiding in the London Borough of Lambeth

This accredited course consists of 30 evening sessions on a Thursday and 15 sessions on a weekend morning or afternoon (usually Saturdays). Students will be required to devote additional time to self-study and for the completion of assignments.
Entry requirements
No previous experience or qualifications are necessary. The course is open to all and enrolment is by application form and successful interview. What is the interview process? Successful applicants will be asked to give a four-minute presentation to a small group of other candidates on a Lambeth topic. You will be notified of your topic in the invitation to interview. Please note: Presentations must be oral – no notes or visual aids are permitted. Interviews for a place on the course will take place in early July. What are the selection criteria? The interview process is designed to assess your suitability for the course and for guiding. The assessment criteria will include whether the candidate demonstrates that they:
• Communicate clearly
• Engage, interest and make information accessible to a wide variety of people
• Have enthusiasm and commitment to guiding in Lambeth
• Are able to assimilate knowledge, e.g. is accurate in the content of the presentation
• Are able to conduct some independent research, e.g. has researched the presentation topic
• Can manage their time well, e.g. does not exceed four minutes
What you need to know before you enrol
The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, practical walks, presentations and workshops. As the course progresses students will be expected to give presentations on particular themes. The course is assessed by a written project and by two practical examinations. In addition, the course tutors will monitor students’ learning throughout the course and will give formal feedback at regular intervals during the course. When completing your personal statement please include: What is your favourite part of Lambeth and why? Why do you want to become a Lambeth guide? Any practical tour guiding experience
What you need
A wide range of resources will be available to students, both in Morley’s library and in the Borough Archives. Access to the internet is required for the development of virtual presentations. Basic computer skills are required (use of email, ability to research topics on the internet, use of word processing software). In addition, familiarity with Powerpoint, Keynote or equivalent software will be an advantage. Students should be prepared to use Zoom or an equivalent for the sessions on virtual presentation skills. You should also be prepared for rainy or windy weather during the half-days spent out and about on the streets of Lambeth.
What you can do next
After the course you will be qualified as a Lambeth Tour Guide and can work within Lambeth as a self-employed guide leading guided walks, or contributing on a voluntary basis as a guide to the cultural events across the borough. Morley has a wide range of history courses for students who wish to extend their knowledge of particular periods and places. There are also courses available in marketing, IT and business skills.
