What you will learn

A resist dye method, working with hot wax, using traditional tools to create a variety of patterns, marks and figurative imagery on cloth. Paint directly onto the cloth with fibre reactive dyes, to create colourful and expressive designs with this very versatile technique. Suitable for all levels.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Have a working knowledge of traditional and contemporary batik practices
  • Use a variety of tools, including tjantings (pen-like tools for applying hot wax) to draw with wax and to use procion dyes
  • Use the college steamer to fix dye colour

  • Class format and activities

    Batik textile examples and tools will be studied and discussed. The tutor will then demonstrate the use of tools for 'drawing and mark making on cloth; the mixing and use of dyes and how to use the steamer to fix dye colour. You will be given regular feed back during the course.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The textiles studio is located in the Nancy Seear block on the second floor accessible by stairs or lift and stair lift combined. If you have any mobility support needs please contact ALS on 020 7450 1972 before enrolling

    What you need

    You can bring sketch books, photographs and other forms of visual imagery for design inspiration. Fabric is available for purchase, however you are welcome to bring your own fine cottons and silks to use. An apron to protect your clothes.
