What you will learn

Continuing on from Bass 2, this course will extend your playing techniques in a range of styles, tackling more challenging repertoire and refining your improvisation and accompaniment techniques in a range of World Music styles. This is the ideal class to get prepared to join one of our other ensembles. You'll need your own bass, but learning materials are provided

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Term 1 – Play grooves in the style of Reggae
  • Term 2 – Play grooves in Latin styles (inc. Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, Mambo, Rumba, Samba)
  • Term 3 – Play grooves in African styles of music (inc. Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Mali, Somalia, South Africa)
  • Improvise in Reggae, Latin and African styles
  • Have an improved understanding about the role of a bass player
  • Read basic music notation
  • Perform with confidence and skill
  • Understand how to progress to the next level.

  • Class format and activities

    Classes will be held at Morley College and are continuous over three terms. Each term is a separate course: Bass Guitar 3A (from September), Bass Guitar 3B (from January), Bass Guitar 3C (from April). The tutor provides handouts for each lesson and demonstrates current coursework, including any details about theory, harmony, rhythm, phrasing, and technique. Students are encouraged to perform each exercise, which the tutor accompanies on guitar, piano or with backing tracks. Play-along backing tracks are provided for homework and personal development. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, feedback, advice, and Q&A sessions are conducted in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    A reasonable command of your instrument and a basic understanding of chord symbols and harmony is required, This course follows on from Bass Guitar 2, but is also designed for those who have not attended before. If in doubt, please discuss with the tutor which bass guitar course you are most suited for. Online enrolment on term 3 of this course is only available to those enrolled in the previous term.     Due to the nature of the instrument, you might be exposed to high volume levels. You may wish to bring ear plugs to lessons.
