What you will learn

Continuing on from Bass 2, this course will extend your playing techniques in a range of styles, tackling more challenging repertoire and refining your improvisation and accompaniment techniques in a range of Pop, Rock and Jazz styles. This is the ideal class to get prepared to join one of our Jazz or Pop and Rock ensembles. You'll need your own bass but learning materials are provided

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Play grooves in various African styles (Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Somalia, Soweto, Zaire, Zimbabwe)
  • Improvise in a variety of World Music styles
  • Play an appropriate range of scales and arpeggios
  • Have a better understanding of chord symbols and chord sequences
  • Play a wide variety of contrasting exercises in tempo
  • Perform with greater confidence and skill

    Students are given handouts for each lesson., The tutor explains and demonstrates examples so that students can copy or develop ideas., The tutor accompanies on bass guitar or piano so that students develop a sense of performance., Theory of music, phrasing, harmony, rhythm and technique is applied in a practical way., Students are provided with pre-recorded mp3 audio files for practice at home.

    Entry requirements

    A reasonable command of your instrument and a basic understanding of chord symbols and harmony is required, This course follows on from Bass Guitar 2, but is also designed for those who have not attended before., If in doubt, please discuss with the tutor which bass guitar course you are most suited for., Online enrolment on term 3 of this course is only available to those enrolled in the previous term.     What you need to know before you enrol

    Due to the nature of the instruments/content of the course you might be exposed to high volume levels. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a pair of ear plugs to every lesson.
