What you will learn

A 90 minute advance technique class, Ballet: Intermediate focusses on developing strength, movement vocabulary and musicality. The course suits those who wish to challenge their capabilities under professional supervision. Please be aware that this course is higher level study and is suited to students with previous experience of Ballet and / or other forms of dance training relevant to Ballet. If you have need of guidance about attending this course, please contact 020 7450 1832 / dance@morleycollege.ac.uk  Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Maintain turn-out and placement at the appropriate level for your physique
  • Demonstrate balance and control during adage sequences
  • Perform a range of steps, including balance, pas de basque, pas de bourree
  • Understand the elements of a pirouette (arm and head co-ordination, spotting)
  • Perform enchainements with musicality
  • Develop stamina, co-ordination and alignment

    Classes will include a set barre based mainly on Vaganova technique (Russian school) Port de bras, adage, allegro and simple batterie steps Preliminary study of pirouettes (arm and head co-ordination) New ballet vocabulary at intermediate level. A greater awareness of alignment, musicality and stance. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students.

    Entry requirements

    A minimum of 2 years ballet training to an intermediate Level. A good level of fitness and mobility. Commitment to attend class regularly and punctually. If you have concerns about the physical demands of this course, please seek medical advice and inform the tutor about any activities you have been advised to avoid.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Students will be expected to work to their own personal best. Stamina will be developed with regular class attendance. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course may include some completion of activities outside of class time. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, have any serious health conditions or a history of injury. Please inform your tutor if there is any physical activity you have be advised to avoid. In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning. Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration. Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed.

    What you need

    Tights, leotard, ballet shoes worn with elastic and/or ribbons. Leg warmers, towel (optional). Dance support for men, ballet skirt for women. Hair must be secured before class. No large bracelets or sharp jewellery which may cause injury to you or someone else.
