This exciting course will allow you to define your place within the rapidly changing world of fashion. Opportunities to develop professional skills through independent and collaborative projects will enable you to explore, experiment, refine and evaluate your own practice and gain a deeper understanding of the industry in preparation for your fashion career. Each of the specialist course units provides the time and space for a comprehensive exploration of creative concept themes supported by academic research in the completion of your fully realized graduate collection. A final exhibition combining conceptual and commercial outcomes provides potential for you to engage with the public through a presentation or retail setting. Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Concept and Creation - examining the relationship between conceptual design and commercial viability
Extended Essay – exploration of your chosen academic theme through detailed research and analysis
Graduate Collection – the culmination of your research, experimentation and design development to create signature outcomes to a professional standard

Class format and activities

You will be supported in your studies by our expert team of practitioner-tutors and technicians, each of whom are specialists in a range of fields, supported by guest lecturers and contacts within the industry. You will also be encouraged to forge working relationships with professional contacts relevant to your interests and design aesthetic to support the transition into industry upon completion of the course. Our Blended Delivery model provides the flexibility required for small class sizes and robust access to college facilities for classes and independent study onsite while embedding vital transferable skills through online virtual learning. Our user-friendly digital teaching and learning resources support taught sessions and independent study alongside a robust online Fashion Library, with useful tutorial clips, research materials and informational handouts created to help you stretch your skills further. Learning is achieved through project-based briefs with a focus on research driven creative practice and advanced technical skills. You will be assessed through graded projects and coursework, collaborative or interdisciplinary group work, case study projects, assignments and reflective writing. Achievement on your course will be measured by completion of assignments to set deadlines reflecting real world scenarios in a diverse range of formats, including:

Entry requirements

Please refer to the Programme Specification for additional information on entry requirements and the applications process. Applicants will normally be expected to have achieved one of the following in Fashion or Textiles:
• A Level 5 National Diploma (grades Pass, Merit or Distinction)
• Equivalent UK or international qualification
• Evidence of prior learning or industry related work to demonstrate skills at the appropriate level Selection Criteria
• Evidence of research and design development work
• Evidence of appropriate practical skills in garment construction, pattern cutting, prototyping, related digital programmes
• Evidence of the ability to complete written elements of the course at the appropriate level
• Commitment to study, including the ability to complete work within specified deadlines
• Enthusiasm for the subject
• Ability to work independently and in a team

What you need to know before you enrol

The BA (Hons) Top-Up in Fashion is a one-year full time course in a Blended Delivery model. Excellent attendance and punctuality of over 90% is required from all students. In addition to scheduled class sessions, this course requires the completion of self-directed research alongside academic and practical assignments. Attendance at Technician led weekly workshops is also required. Our dedicated ‘Fashion Lab’ workrooms are fully equipped with all of the industry standard equipment needed for your course enhanced by a range of digital applications:
• Individual work areas – Juki industrial sewing machine, K&L Stand, half scale stand, cutting tables, ironing station
• Textiles equipment – sublimation printer, Brother knitting machine, button hole machine, embellisher machine, princess pleater, heat press
• Apple Mac workstations - full Adobe software package
• Gerber Technologies digital pattern cutting software
• Photography studio
• Access to Makerbot 3D Printer

What you need

There is a Materials Fee of £150 to be paid at the start of each academic year for materials packs of consumable supplies relating to your coursework. Support may be available for qualified applicants. A list of required textbooks, tools and equipment required for use in college and at home will be provided at the start of the course. You will also have access to computers, scanners and printers for independent study in the College’s learning centre. To comply with health and safety requirements you will need to purchase a full set of tools and equipment as required for fashion design and garment making and to have these with you during class sessions; your tutors will provide you with details. You will also need the following equipment at home for online classes and independent study:
• A sewing machine
• A desktop or laptop computer with camera and microphone/headset
• Access to internet data/wifi
• A camera or camera phone

What you can do next

The Top-Up year can be the final step in your progression on our accredited Fashion courses beginning with the Access to HE: Fashion Studies and HND (Art & Design) Fashion Diplomas. The BA (Hons) Top-Up year is equivalent to the third year of a university degree and will allow those who have completed a National Diploma or equivalent Level 5 qualification to achieve a full BA (Hons) Degree. Successful completion of this course will provide you with a degree in Fashion to support applications into post-graduate education or into employment within the fashion industry.
