What you will learn

Through this course we propose an alternative future for fashion. One that rejects boundaries of gender, ‘typical’ fashion culture and wasteful and exploitative fashion systems. With a curriculum designed to question the current inherited practice and value systems in fashion education and the industry at large our BA (Hons) Fashion Design seeks to create fashion innovators who eschew a standard approach and instead create and design new processes to address the challenges of waste, inclusions, and environment faced within the industry.

This vision drives all that we do, from reviving heritage skills to better fit the realities of our unstable future to supporting unconventional methods at every point of the process. Our approach is tactile, three dimensional, inclusive and empathetic. It is agile, responsive and encourages uncompromising quality.

We explore how design may be democratised to harness the power of innovation through collaboration and a greater respect and deeper understanding of the context with which we create our design within. Working across multiple fashion disciplines, you will develop a foundation for your practice to be refined throughout your studies and as you progress into industry.

We invite our students to radically re-design design itself. Radical creativity, imagination and innovation are at the heart of all our practice in keeping with our guiding principles of design: Social Inclusivity, Innovative Design, Inventive Method, and Ethically Produced.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Evidence an ability to formulate a response based on research through complex problem solving and to critically evaluate the outcomes within a Fashion discipline.
Evidence of fully resolved outcomes to a high professional standard through ideation and experimentation to communicate individual creative identity in response to identified market or area of practice within Fashion.
Evidence of critical analysis of esta`blished systems within the field of Fashion, synthesising knowledge to communicate an informed position to implement change in response to the social, ethical, and environmental impact of Fashion.
Evidence of reflective practice in applied research, experimentation and technology, assimilating collaboration and feedback to formulate a creative response to engage in entrepreneurship and professional development.

Class format and activities

You will be supported in your studies by our expert team of practitioner-tutors and technicians, each of whom are specialists in a range of fields, supported by guest lecturers and contacts within the industry. You will also be encouraged to forge working relationships with professional contacts relevant to your interests and design aesthetic to support the transition into industry upon completion of the course. Our Blended Delivery model provides the flexibility required for small class sizes and robust access to college facilities for classes and independent study onsite while embedding vital transferable skills through online virtual learning. Our user-friendly digital teaching and learning resources support taught sessions and independent study alongside a robust online Fashion Library, with useful tutorial clips, research materials and informational handouts created to help you stretch your skills further. Learning is achieved through project-based briefs with a focus on research driven creative practice and advanced technical skills. You will be assessed through graded projects and coursework, collaborative or interdisciplinary group work, case study projects, work placement, assignments and reflective writing. Achievement will be measured by completion of assignments to set deadlines, reflecting real world scenarios in a diverse range of formats, including: • Academic and visual research files • Sketchbook and portfolio • Written assignments • 2D and 3D experimentation and sampling • Final garments, patterns, and prototypes • Material explorations • Computer Aided Design • Digital and live presentations • Critiques

Entry requirements

Applicants for entry in Year 1 should have achieved a level 3 qualification with 48 UCAS points in fashion or a relevant art and design subject. GCSEs, grade 4/C or above, in Maths and English (or an equivalent level of qualification) is desirable. For non-native English speakers, an IELTS 5.5 is required. Applicants for entry in Year 2 should have achieved all of the above plus a Level 4 qualification in fashion or a relevant art and design subject. Applicants for entry in Year 3 should have achieved all of the above plus a Level 5 qualification in fashion or a relevant art and design subject. We offer places based on portfolio and all students are expected to have a good standard of computer literacy with confidence in using Microsoft Office programmes. All applicants are invited to participate in one of our signature Taster Days where they will have the opportunity to experience a range of practice sessions and to present their portfolio during a personal interview. Applications are welcomed from those who may not possess formal entry qualifications, mature students, those with work experience or with qualifications other than those listed above. Such applicants should demonstrate sufficient aptitude and potential to complete the course successfully. Applicants will be assessed at interview in accordance with Ravensbourne’s Accreditation of Prior Learning Policy and Procedure and Student Transfer Plan.

What you need to know before you enrol

The BA (Hons) in Fashion Design is a 3 year, full time course in a Blended Delivery model. Excellent attendance and punctuality of over 90% is required from all students. In addition to scheduled class sessions, this course requires the completion of self-directed research alongside academic and practical assignments. Attendance at Technician led weekly workshops is also required. Our dedicated ‘Fashion Lab’ workrooms are fully equipped with all of the industry standard equipment needed for your course enhanced by a range of digital applications: • Individual and Group work areas – Juki industrial sewing machines, K&L Stands, half scale stands, cutting tables, ironing stations • Textiles equipment – sublimation printer, Brother knitting machine, button hole machine, embellisher machine, princess pleater, heat press • Apple Mac workstations - full Adobe software package • Gerber Technologies digital pattern cutting software • Photography studio • Access to Makerbot 3D Printer

What you need

There is a Materials Fee of £150 to be paid at the start of each academic year for materials packs of consumable supplies relating to your coursework. Support may be available for qualified applicants. A list of required textbooks, tools and equipment you will be required to purchase for use in college and at home will be provided at the start of the course. You will have access to computers, scanners and printers for independent study in the College’s learning centre. You will also need the following equipment at home for online classes and independent study: • A sewing machine • A desktop or laptop computer with camera and microphone/headset • Access to internet data/wifi • A camera or camera phone

Successful completion of this course will provide you with a degree in Fashion to support applications into post-graduate education or into employment within the fashion industry.
