What you will learn

This course is a general survey of Islamic art in its various forms from its beginnings in the 7th century to the early modern period. The development will be traced through the examination of architecture, manuscript illustration, textiles, pottery and other art forms.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyse the relationship between art and architecture and the Islamic religion
  • Differentiate key Islamic monuments and artworks with respect to the historic periods, geographic areas, and social contexts from which they emerge.
  • Compare and contrast the principal materials, techniques, iconographies, and styles of Islamic art.
  • Identify the most important artistic contributions of the Islamic civilization to human culture
