What you will learn

This course will look at the ‘splendid and slightly crazed diversity’ of British Art from1940 to 1960. We will look at the art that was for many years, ignored in the rush towards international abstraction in the 1960s: the neo-romantics; the kitchen-sink realists, the new brutalists, the geometry of fear sculptors. Artists will include Graham Sutherland, Ivon Hitchens, Frances Hodgkins, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, John Craxton, John Minton, Robert Colqhoun, Michael Ayrton, Josef Herman, Joan Eardley, Peter de Francia, Prunella Clough, Frank Auerbach, David Bomberg, Leon Kossoff, Lynn Chadwick and Elizabeth Frink.
