What you will learn

On this course you will explore Classical Acting training. Based on Stanislavski’s theories, you will learn how to use your body and your imagination to create truthful characters. You will learn how to analyse texts and scenes, what it means to play ‘Objectives’, and how to approach a play from an actor’s point of view. We will be using texts from Shakespeare, and explore how we can apply Stanislavski’s theory to bring Shakespeare’s characters to life.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how to bring a character from page to stage
  • Analyse a passage of text from an actor's point of view
  • Understand the key features of Shakespeare's use of language and their effect in performance
  • Confidently perform speeches and scenes alone and as part of an ensemble

    This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with a basic understanding of acting, who want to explore Shakespeare with a Stanislavski approach. This is a practical course, and you will need to have a willingness to participate in activities and exercises.

    Class format and activities

    The class will focus on developing an understanding of the play and of an actor’s preparation. In weekly online classes, we will discuss the play, analyse the characters, do in-depth text work, and rehearse sections of the play together. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. You will be able to attend by means of in-person/face-to-face participation or via live-stream using Microsoft Teams for online connection. This practical study will suit those in the studio and those attending via live-stream connection.
