What you will learn

An Access to HE Diploma in Social Science could be your first step towards studying at university and help you get onto your desired career path. The course will equip you with a thorough grounding in the principles and practical skills required for a wide range of courses within this subject area, with various aspects of law, sociology and psychology covered in class. Achievement on your course will be measured by completion of assignments / portfolio. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. You will have an opportunity at the start of the course to discuss with your tutor your goals and how you wish to progress. You will have regular and detailed feedback from your course tutor, and receive help and guidance through the university application process. Students from this programme have progressed to related degree courses in a variety of subjects; such as Sociology, Economics, International Relations, Psychology, Counselling, Criminology, Anthropology, Developmental Studies, Cultural Studies, Education, Social Work, Law and many more.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Study Skills: Note taking, research, essay writing, presentation, report writing, exam skills and more
Law: Crime and deviance, negligence law, duty of care in the law, contractual law, the protection of human rights and elements of a crime
Sociology: Introduction to sociology, education of sociology, sociolgy of health, sociology of the family and crime and deviance
Psychology: intoduction to psychology, psychological abnormality, developmental and social psychology

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Access to HE Diploma (Social Science) [OCNLR]

Class format and activities

You will be studying four subjects: Psychology, Sociology, Law and Study Skills. This course will be delivered incentre.

Entry requirements

- You must be aged 19 or over - You should have GCSEs in Maths and English (grades A – C) or a recognised equivalent. You will need these two qualifications in addition to the Access to HE Diploma to progress to most university courses. In addition to completing the Access Diploma, Universities expect Social Work candidates to have undertaken professional and/or voluntary work in an area relevant to social work.

What you need to know before you enrol

Your Access course will be very enjoyable, but also requires real dedication and commitment if you are going to succeed. Your course requires attendance around two and a half days a week. The course runs from the beginning of September to the end of June. We endeavour to prepare students for the demands of a University degree course in just nine short months. It is therefore essential that you think about how you are going to balance work, family and social life with your studies. You will be expected to do regular reading and written work on top of attendance in classes. We strive to make the courses as stimulating as possible for everyone, but it does require hard-work and determination on your part.
