What you will learn

An Access to HE Diploma in Humanities at Morley College London Waterloo could be your first step towards studying at university and help you get onto your desired career path. The course will equip you with a thorough grounding in the principles and skills required for a wide range of Humanities degree courses. You will have regular and detailed feedback from your course tutor, and receive help and guidance with the university application process. Students from this programme have progressed to a wide range of related degree courses, such as History, English Language, English Lit, Philosophy, Creative Writing, Journalism, Anthropology, Politics, Classics and many more.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Study Skills: note taking, reading and comprehension, essay writing, preparation for Higher Education, speaking and listening, and extended project
History. Students will study the following four units: the Enlightenment, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, civil rights in the USA and Israel and Palestine
Philosophy. Students will study the following units: epistemology, ethics and elementary logic and reasoning
Literature. Students will study poetry, the novel and a Shakespeare play
Creative Writing. Students will study writing fiction, writing drama and writing autobiography

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Access to HE Diploma (Humanities) [OCNLR]

Class format and activities

From September 2024, all modules will be compulsory. The units on History, Philosophy, Literature and Creative Writing will be confirmed at the start of the course. Achievement on your course will be measured by completion of assignments/portfolios. Your progress to achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have the opportunity to discuss your goals with your tutor and how you wish to progress.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 19 or over and you should have GCSEs in English (grades A – C) or a recognised equivalent. In order to progress to university, you will need these two qualifications in addition to the Access to HE Diploma.

What you need to know before you enrol

Your Access course will be very enjoyable, but also requires real dedication and commitment if you are going to succeed. You need to be able to attend courses on average 2.5 days a week. In addition, you will have to spend at least 15 hours a week doing independent study. The course runs from the beginning of September to the end of June. We endeavour to prepare students for the demands of a university degree course in just nine short months. It is therefore essential that you think about how you are going to balance work, family and social life with your studies. You will be expected to do regular reading and written work on top of attendance in classes. We strive to make the courses as stimulating as possible.
