What you will learn

Discover our series of jazz listening and appreciation courses. In this three-week course we will explore the origins of Jazz, its myths, legends, and realities in the complex cultural context in which it emerged and flourished.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Better understand the different idioms and styles of jazz
Recognise the main musical features and styles in Jazz
Formulate informed critical judgement of the vocabulary, the different styles and performance conventions of jazz

Class format and activities

Listening to tutor presentation, explanation and demonstration. Guided analytical listening and group discussion. Taking your own notes. Participating in discussion based on tutor’s presentation and on your own reading and listening homework.

Willingness to listen to set works and read outside course hours. Good English
