Discover our series of jazz listening and appreciation courses. In this three-week course we will explore the development of jazz piano playing from its origins to today. A fascinating journey touching on the incredible music of James P. Johnson, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Bud Powel, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Nat King Cole and many others.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Better understand the different idioms and styles of jazz
  • Recognise the main musical features and styles in Jazz piano playing
  • Formulate informed critical judgement of the vocabulary, the different styles and performance conventions of jazz
  • Understand the performance practices of jazz in their social, economic, cultural and historical context

    Listening to tutor presentation, explanation and demonstration. Guided analytical listening and group discussion. Taking your own notes. Participating in discussion based on tutor’s presentation and on your own reading and listening homework.
