What you will learn

Develop creative expression and confidence in this classic art form. The emphasis is on exploring materials and recycling, using glass, ceramic tiles, china, mirror, and marble. The course encompasses a wide range of approaches from fine art to ornament, to creating pieces for your home or garden. Application may be 2D or 3D. Suitable for all levels, especially beginners.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Research and develop ideas for further projects
  • Complete a mosaic independently
  • Describe a range of styles in Mosaics using examples
  • Outline different techniques in Mosaics
  • More advanced students should be able to pursue personal project work in a chosen technique and explore more challenging ideas or techniques such as relief work, 3D surfaces

Class format and activities

Teaching takes place in practical workshops with both group demonstrations and discussions and support. All students negotiate personal learning goals and projects with tutor. You will be working on a project using 1 of 3 techniques: direct, indirect or double indirect, from the design stage, the cutting and adhering of materials, to the final fixing onto a surface or casting into concrete. You will be exploring materials, textures, surface quality and different styles. Students will learn from each other.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for beginners and for more advanced students.

What you need to know before you enrol

Large projects may need more than one term.
The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift. Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 or Art & Design Admin on: 0207 450 1934 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs

What you will need for your class

Bring ideas or sketches to the first session (not obligatory). Tools and a certain amount of materials are supplied on the course, however some students may want to bring their own materials to have a wider range of choice. It is advisable to come to the first session before deciding if you need to buy anything extra.

What you can do next

This course is for beginners, intermediate and advanced students, so returning students are very welcome. There is a lot of individual tuition to cater for individual goals. The course links well to other art and design courses, e.g. fine art, sculpture, general art and design.
