What you will learn

An open sculpture workshop for all abilities (including Beginners) to develop individual creative expression, greater awareness of techniques, safe workshop practice and experiment with new concepts and materials in sculpture. A well-equipped sculpture studio with option to explore many techniques and processes: clay modelling, life body casting, plaster, mould making, casting, construction, wire & basic metal construction. Opportunity to make work with found materials. Basic materials included but charge for materials over allocated materials fee. Students are encouraged to continue throughout the year to develop personal projects.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Beginners will learn clay, plaster and mixed media techniques as an introduction.
  • Pursue personal project work in chosen media, learning and improving skills and developing confidence.
  • Encourage good workshop practice including Health and Safety in relation to self and other studio users.
  • Develop creative expression and aesthetic judgement in relation to project work.

Class format and activities

Develop individual project work.
Tuition is primarily one-to-one and some group work with beginners.
Short projects are set as an introduction to new materials and as a guide to the possibilities and language of sculpture.
Step by step instruction and demonstration is given on new techniques.
Handouts are given on Health & Safety, materials, techniques & reference materials.
All learners negotiate individual learning goals with tutor and record and assess these goals on the Individual learning Plans.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

All levels welcome including beginners and a keen interest in exploring materials, processes & 3 Dimensional form.

What you need to know before you enrol

Some lifting depending on the medium you work with, but there is always help available.

What you will need for your class

•Sketch book and drawing materials.
•Protective clothing (i.e. recommended overall or apron, strong shoes or boots).
•Some extra fees will be charged for materials and ceramic firing when the student uses over and above their allocated course materials fee.
•Where applicable protective clothing supplied by the college must also be worn.

What you can do next

Progress onto: other sculpture and visual art courses in the department; foundation art and design or pre-foundation courses; and/or pursue one’s own creativity independently in own studio.
