What you will learn

Still stuck in the 'Auto' mode on your camera? Want to take better pictures? This course is for beginners who own a Digital Camera and want to learn more of its functions. Learn how to operate your camera in manual mode, make correct exposures in a range of situations and understand aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus and more. This course will give you creative control over your camera thereby encouraging you to take photographs with intention, rather than letting the camera do all the work. This intensive, creative course will increase your confidence and you will soon see your skills - and your photographs - improving.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Understand how a DSLR camera works
  • Choose the right shooting mode and camera settings for particular shooting situation
  • Make good use of different focal lengths
  • Understand the exposure triangle
  • Expose images correctly using semi-automatic or priority modes
  • Understand and experiment with the aperture, shutter speed and ISO controls
  • Recognise and use different composition techniques and the visual elements effectively

Class format and activities

You will work in the studio and on location to take photographs against projects that allow you to control camera functions, experiment and practice. Your work will be shared with the class and feedback is seen as valuable to your learning. Advice will be given on camera gear and types of equipment that may be useful to you. A busy and productive class taught in a professional, well-equipped photography studio. The class will be taught via a mix of presentation, active learning exercises, demonstrations, hand-outs, step-by-step instructions, pair working and group discussion. One to one tuition will be given to help develop ideas and skills and project work assigned to help you progress. The tutor will give demonstrations, presentations and lead group discussions around technical and creative subjects as well as provide assessment and feedback on your progress. Projects will regularly be given to allow for the sharing of your progress, some use of web based presentation tools will be encouraged.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

Ideally students will own a camera that gives access to manual controls. A keen interest in the subject is key to your success and the ability to attend the sessions regularly in order to get the most out of the course is desirable. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes, listen to instructions and discuss related topics, therefore students should have a reasonable level of skill in speaking, reading and writing in English. This course can be taken alongside with any of our digital design, film and photography courses and will help you to gain the confidence you need when working with cameras and film making equipment. The best thing to bring with you is energy, enthusiasm and commitment!

What you need to know before you enrol

During the course we may be going out to take photographs around the college and some lessons may be outside on location. A reasonable level of fitness will be required for walking and carrying equipment such as tripods. The studio also contains Apple MacBooks for uploading and working with images. It would be helpful if you have some familiarity with Macintosh computers and know how to use standard menus and commands. However this is not an essential requirement as these skills can be picked up during the course. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes and discuss related topics. You may wish to revise and practise at home to reinforce what you have learned during the lesson. Information about computers and relevant software will be provided by the tutor. Many of the Art & Design studios have limited accessibility. If you have restricted mobility please contact the Art & Design Administrator on 0207 450 1934 or Learning Support on 0207 450 1835 before enrolling.

What you will need for your class

To get the most from your learning it would be helpful to have your own camera and lens. Your camera should allow you access to manual controls. We have a number of college cameras and other photography equipment for use in class time only. It would be helpful for you to bring a pen and notepad, as you may wish to take notes. Also recommended is a storage device such as USB Memory stick (minimum 8GB) or mini-hard drive. This is for storage of media during the course and of your work at the end. If you are using software on your course it would be beneficial to your studies if you possess the software for use at home. As a student of Morley College you are entitled to a discount on Adobe CC Software. Your tutor can advise you on how to apply for this. Please bring your camera, any additional lenses, cables and batteries/memory cards and a charger. You may find a notebook and pen useful.
