What you will learn

Do you need a kick-start for your poetry? Work with a practising poet, discussing features of modern poetry and exploring some of the skills involved in its creation. Exercises draw on memory, observation and personal meditation.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Write new poems using a range of starting points and inspirations.
  • Explore simple forms such as the haiku and the prose poem.
  • Understand the influence of accent, dialect and place in your poetry.
  • Discuss and evaluate a poem with sensitivity.
  • Begin to recognise your own 'voice' and your own capabilities, and draw strength and confidence from these.

Class format and activities

Practical and playful writing exercises designed to stimulate the imagination and promote confidence.
Group discussion of published poems.
Group discussion of each other’s poems in a supportive workshop atmosphere.
You will receive advice and guidance from the tutor on all aspects of poetry and help with individual writing problems.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

Level 2 in written English, but enthusiasm and the desire to write are equally important.
