What you will learn

Develop your bellydance technique and confidence! Using Level 1 of the Salimpour format, students are guided through more advanced movements and combinations and work on layering different foot patterns with pelvic and torso isolations. Finger cymbals are used and a basic knowledge of Jamila Salimpour cymbal patterns is required. This course is for students with a good understanding of bellydance technique specifically using Suhaila Salimpour format, i.e. completed the Improvers Courses at Morley College or its equivalent.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Show proficiency in the warm-up exercises designed to promote the specific physical strength and muscle development required to execute this dance safely and efficiently.
  • Perform basic movements quarter time and/or half time with specific footwork patterns and timing
  • Perform short combinations with tutor with or without finger cymbals
  • Coordinate arm and hand movements to complement dancing

Class format and activities

Class begins with a series of warm-up stretches followed by specific strengthening techniques developed for bellydance isolations. Each week focuses on a specific movement that we drill standing and travelling followed by a short choreography incorporating that movement and/or finger cymbals. We finish class a series of gentle cool-down stretches
In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning.
Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
