Belly Dance Improvers
What you will learn
For students with a basic knowledge of belly dance technique i.e. those who have completed the Autumn term at Morley College. Working with muscular undulations and 3/4 timing, we incorporate an in-depth focus on Suhaila Salimpour travelling drills in addition to upper-body movement. This course begins the study of Jamila Salimpour finger cymbal technique and patterns. Stylisation is mainly Egyptian and American cabaret but can also lean towards tribal fusion and theatrical bellydance.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Perform specific isolations of upper and lower body with tutor and in groups and understand where the movement comes from
- Perform travel sequences alone and with upper and lower body isolations on top with tutor and in groups
- Perform short sequences and choreographies with tutor and in groups
- Hold posture in basic frame and move arms and hands to compliment your dancing
Class format and activities
Class begins with a series of warm-up stretches followed by specific strengthening techniques developed for belly dance isolations. Each week focuses on a specific movement that we drill standing and travelling. The teacher then leads the class in a series of gentle cool-down stretches followed by a lesson in finger cymbal playing and patterns.
In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning.
Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
A basic foundation in bellydance technique i.e. completed Belly Dance: Introduction & Beginners course at Morley College or its equivalent
Please note, it may not be suited to women in the first months of pregnancy.

What you need to know before you enrol
Classes are based in Suhaila Salimpour format which is a very unique style of bellydance (i.e. shimmies are done by isolating your gluteus muscles rather than pumping your knees). Classes include strength training and drills which can be physically demanding so students should be prepared to work hard
Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed.
What you will need for your class
Hip scarf to emphasize movement
Yoga pants or leggings and a t-shirt or tight fitting top so instructor can see your movement.
Student should be prepared to work in bare feet or wear jazz shoes/ballet slippers
Finger cymbals. These can be purchased in class or the teacher can recommend the best place for students to buy them.

Progression to Belly Dance: Intermediate is subject to tutor approval. Please speak to the class tutor if you are an existing beginner or improver level student. For all new students, attend a free intermediate level trial session at the beginning of term so as to meet with the tutor and assess your level.
