What you will learn

Study the art of tapestry weaving through the interpretation of the artist's mark. Learn to design, make cartoons and use colour recognition through flat weave techniques of blending, hatching and half passes. The group will look at the work of artists such as Tracey Emin, John Hubbard and Gillian Ayres, all painters the tutor has worked with on a series of commissioned tapestries. This course is suitable for those with previous experience and beginners.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • demonstrate how to warp up a frame
  • demonstrate techniques such as blending, hatching, weaving dots, lines and other mark making
  • create your own designs and cartoons for future tapestries
  • discuss the work of contemporary artists and weavers

Class format and activities

• Listening to tutor presentation, explanation, demonstration, in group and one-to-one learning
• Critical analysis of current approaches to tapestry weaving
• Setting your own learning goals in conjunction with the tutor
• Weaving set samples, and your own designed project
