What you will learn

This intensive course is aimed at people who want to learn to draw or improve their skills but who can’t commit to a longer course. Sessions will cover different strategies for drawing from direct observation, giving a solid foundation for development. Materials provided in first session.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Measure and compare the proportions of an object
  • Make a line drawing from direct observation
  • Produce a full range of tones from pencil and charcoal
  • Analyse and draw the negative spaces around objects

Class format and activities

Your tutor will guide you through set tasks which the whole group will do together. This is a practical course and most of your time will be spent drawing. There will be explanations and demonstrations by the tutor and a variety of activities.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

No. this course is aimed at beginners and those wishing to refresh their drawing skills.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course takes place in C33 which is accessible by lift.

The five sessions will be quite intensive but there will be the chance to take a break and there won’t be any compulsory homework.

What you will need for your class

Materials are provided for the first session but it will then be helpful to bring:
Soft pencils (2B - 9B are all suitable)
Eraser or putty rubber
Pencil sharpener
Charcoal (available to buy in class)
Sketchbook (A5 or larger)
Drawing paper (this may also be purchased in class)

What you can do next

This course offers a basic grounding in observational drawing. Students may develop their skills and understanding in one of the longer courses offered at Morley in Drawing or Painting & Drawing.
