Course Structure

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) Photography course provides a broad introduction into a wide range of photographic practices. It is a nationally recognized Level 4 qualification, which is equivalent to the first year of a degree course. Our HNC offers an overview into editorial and commercial photography, as well as professional practice. It is designed for those who wish to develop a range of skills in order to enter the photographic profession. The course is offered as full-time (2 days per week over 1 year), or part-time (1 day per week over 2 years).
Emphasis throughout the course will be on developing methodical research skills and analytical thinking, which will allow students to develop their ideas and produce a strong body of photographic work.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Apply research and planning techniques, to develop a photographic strategy, in response to a given brief.
  • Produce photographic images utilising lighting equipment and camera techniques.
  • Process and print photographic images using darkroom techniques
  • Process and create photographic images using post-production techniques
  • Present a strong body of photographic work through an online platform

As this is an online plus course, the practical aspects of the different Units will be delivered in Chelsea Centre with social distancing, while the theoretical ones, as well as group and individual tutorials will be delivered online, using Microsoft Teams.

All course materials (project briefs, background notes, handouts, you tube videos, links to galleries etc.) will be available online and accessible via our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle. Recordings of online presentations will be available on Microsoft Teams. Students will also have remote access to a number of Adobe apps related to the course, such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed regularly. Throughout the course you will be greatly encouraged and entirely supported to reach your full potential with constructive feedback provided by your tutor.

At the end of your studies you will have the opportunity to exhibit a body of your photographic work to promote yourself in your chosen pathway. Throughout your journey you will be urged to work independently, while our experienced photographic team will continuously support you.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
